About Transitions® Lenses

Transitions lenses: the most convenient way to enjoy better vision, indoors and out, today and tomorrow.

Does the glare of the sun cause you to squint and strain your eyes?  Do your eyes sometimes get tired when you’re outside?  Do you sometimes have trouble seeing objects when the bright sun is shining?

Transitions lenses are clear indoors and at night but automatically adjust their level of tint to changing light conditions outdoors. They provide visual comfort and quality at any and every moment, helping you to see better today.

And just like sunblock protects your skin, Transitions lenses help preserve the health and wellness of your eyes for the future by blocking 100% of harmful UV rays, so you can see better tomorrow too.

More Information

If light conditions remained as constant as they are in your eyecare professional’s exam room, you wouldn’t need anything more than clear lenses in your glasses.

But think about how many times you move from indoors to outdoors and from sunny skies to overcast.
Each and every time you do, your eyes must try to adapt to that changing light, often making it difficult to see objects clearly and making your eyes feel tired and uncomfortable. That’s why we developed Transitions lenses … lenses that conveniently and automatically change as light changes, so you can see better everywhere you go – without ever having to change eyeglasses.

Transitions lenses are photochromic lenses. "Photochromic" means the lenses change from clear to dark in the presence of ultraviolet (UV) radiation, such as when exposed to sunlight. Indoors and at night, Transitions lenses are as clear as regular clear lenses. Outdoors, when exposed to the sun's UV rays, they turn sunglass dark, enhancing the quality of vision by reducing glare, thereby minimizing eye strain and fatigue, and improving contrast in all light conditions. And it's all automatic.

UV 400 LogoBut Transitions lenses don't stop at improving visual quality and visual comfort. Like your skin, your eyes need sun protection too. Transitions lenses block 100% of damaging UVA and UVB radiation, providing UV400 protection, helping to preserve your long-term eye health.

Convenience and protection can be fashionable, too.
Transitions lenses are compatible with virtually all frames and are available in a wide range of lens materials and prescriptions. Chances are if your prescription is available in a clear lens, it's also available in a Transitions lens.

Everyday lenses that can help you see better today … and tomorrow.

If you ever have to squint or strain your eyes in sunlight, or have trouble seeing objects clearly in bright sunlight, chances are your everyday eyeglasses could do a better job of providing you with all-day, automatic visual quality, comfort and long-term protection. Ask your eyecare professional about lenses that can help you see better today and tomorrow. Simply put, Transition lenses are not just as good as clear lenses, they're clearly better.

Everyone can benefit by wearing Transitions lenses.
For anyone who has ever experienced eye strain and fatigue or found themselves squinting in outdoor light, Transitions lenses are an ideal option. Transitions lenses help to make it easier for virtually anyone to see better and more comfortably in any light while enjoying protection for long-term eye health - all automatically and all with the convenience of one lens. As you read more about how they work and the protective benefits you will quickly see why Transitions lenses are a great choice for most eyeglass wearers.

Some can benefit even more.
Transitions lenses are particularly ideal everyday prescription eyewear for children, active adults and some patients with specific eyecare considerations.

Children and teenagers

Kids need to see better too. Whether in school or outside playing, children often have even greater demands on their eyes than adults do. And, those young eyes may be even more sensitive to bright sun light. That's why it's just as important to provide them with better vision today. Indoors and at night, Transitions lenses are as clear as regular clear lenses, making it easy for kids to function in class or do their homework. Outdoors, they automatically adjust their tint to minimize glare, making it easier for kids to see better while significantly reducing the discomfort of squinting, eye strain and eye fatigue.

For long-term protection, parents often take precautions to protect their children's skin from the sun, but they may not realize the importance of protecting their eyes from the sun's harmful ultraviolet rays. Because kids spend more time outdoors, the average child receives three times the annual UV exposure as an adult. What's more, because the eyes of children are not fully developed, kids are significantly more vulnerable to ultraviolet rays - as much as six times more ultraviolet radiation is able to penetrate their eyes than an adult. Transitions lenses block 100% of UVA and UVB rays, providing constant UV400 protection.

Children also require a safe, shatter-resistant lens material. Transitions lenses are available in sturdy, lightweight, shatter-and impact-resistant materials in the industry's widest selection of lens designs and brand names.

Active Adults

As you go about an active life that can take you frequently from indoors to outdoors - as you work and pursue recreational activities - the last thing you need is compromised vision, eye strain and fatigue or the worries of your eyesight being damaged by UV exposure. Transitions lenses are the most convenient way to optimize vision performance and increase visual comfort while also ensuring automatic, everyday protection from harmful UV rays for anyone who wears prescription eyeglasses. By reducing glare and blocking 100% of UVA and UVB rays, Transitions lenses are the most convenient way for the active adult eyeglass wearer to see better today and tomorrow.

Patients with Special Needs

Patients with special vision needs may be excellent candidates for Transitions lenses because of the convenience and protection they provide. Ideal candidates for Transitions lenses can include:

  • The elderly
  • Children
  • Individuals with sensitive eyes
  • Individuals with certain medical conditions
  • Individuals who have developed cataracts or other eye conditions
  • Individuals who have undergone recent eye surgery
  • Individuals taking certain medications that have ocular side effects

Certain people develop a heightened sensitivity to light, known as photosensitivity, and are more susceptible to invisible UV rays and visible glare. And some medications, even those used to treat conditions unrelated to vision, can cause the eyes to be more susceptible to damage from UV rays.

Eyecare professionals agree: Transitions lenses are the single most convenient way for their patients to protect their eyes.

During recent product testing, eyecare professionals were asked if Transitions lenses were a good choice for eyeglass wearers with specific vision needs. After wearing the lenses for two weeks, the professionals who answered "yes" increased in number by more than 10-fold.*
