Frequently Asked Questions

Anti Reflective Coating - Anti Reflective coatings help eliminate glare on the lens surface. Most eyeglass wearers will notice glare from the oncoming headlights when driving at night. However glare comes from other sources such as indoor lighting, classrooms and computer screens. Anti reflective coatings will greatly reduce all types of glare the wearer sees, as well as most of the glare on the lens surface. When glare is removed more light is allowed to enter the eye therefore providing better vision. Cosmetically this will make the eyeglass lenses look invisible andl allow people to see your eyes better, behind your eyeglass lenses. This coating is recommended for adults and children.

Thin & Lite Lenses - There are many categories of thin & lite lenses. These lenses are measured by their index of refraction. Generally the higher the index of refraction,  the thinner the lens will be.  However this is not always true. Other factors that need to be considered, are frame size, frame shape, the wearers pupillary distance, and other  parameters. Our NYS liscened opticians will use our lens thickness software to guide you to the lens material that will be best for you.

Progressive Lenses - Progressive lenses allow the wearer to use one pair of glasses to see clearly for distance, reading and intermediate.  They eliminate the constant need to switch between distance and reading glasses. They also eliminate having to take off your reading glasses to see in the distance or your distance glasses to read. There are many different types of progressive lenses including digitally surfaced designs, which give the wearer sharper vision and a wider field of view. They are also easier to adapt to than conventional progressive lenses. Money back warranty on progressive lenses - if you cannot adapt to your new progressive lenses with in 60 days we will change your lenses to another type and refund the difference in price.

What does 20/400 mean?

20/400 is just a method of measuring your vision. It allows the doctor to rate your vision as compared to perfect vision. For example, a person with 20/20 vision can be 400 feet from a sign and read it. A person with 20/400 vision will have to move from 400 feet to 20 feet before they are able to read the sign.

Will my eyes ever stabilize?

Typically a person's vision will fluxuate from birth through childhood and up to approximately twenty years of age before they stabilize. At forty years of age, difficulty with near vision will occur and continue to approximately fifty-five years of age.

Why do I need an eye exam? I see clearly.

Many times a patient believes they see clearly because a prescription can change very gradually. Your doctor also checks the health of the eye. Routine exams are recommended, as your doctor not only determines a prescription, but looks for eye conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, cataracts, retinal detachments, etc.

Should Your Child Have a Professional Eye Exam?

Here are some facts that may surprise you:

  • One out of every four children has an undetected vision problem that may impede learning.

  • Eighty percent of what we learn before age 12, we learn through our visual system.

  • Children are the least likely group to have visited an eyecare professional in the last year.

  • Many in-school vision screenings rely primarily on the Snellen (Big E) eye chart which detects only 20 to 30 percent of vision problems in children.

  • Poor vision is one of the leading causes of learning difficulties in elementary school children.

  • What are some of the Symptoms that might indicate a child has a vision problem?Rubbing eyes repeatedly

  • Using a finger as a place mark while reading

  • Holding head at an angle while reading

  • Complaining of headaches after reading

  • Shutting or covering one eye to focus

  • Sitting too close to the television

  • Holding books too close to the face

  • Developing red or crusty eyes

  • Daydreaming

ARE YOU A RIGHTY OR A LEFTY?

Just as people are right-handed or left-handed, so too are they either right-eyed or left-eyed. To determine whether your right or left eye is your dominant eye, hold a piece of cardboard or paper with a 1-inch hole in the center in both hands at arm's length. With both eyes open, sight a distant object through the hole. Move the cardboard or paper slowly toward your face. Which eye is looking through the hole? That is your dominant eye.

What is astigmatism?

Astigmatism is a common irregularity in the cornea of the eye that distorts vision. Instead of having a round, spherical shape like a baseball, the cornea is elongated or "flattened" like a football. About half of the people in the U.S. who need vision correction have astigmatism.

How does astigmatism affect my vision?

Think of a funhouse mirror that stretches and distorts images; that's how your astigmatism works. The irregular shape of the cornea can stretch an image vertically, horizontally or at an angle, depending on the direction of the astigmatism.

What's in a Frame?

The frame holds the lenses. It's that simple. Or is it? Eyewear options range from thin, bendable titanium frames to bold, laminated plastics. Popular shapes include the squared-off oval and the rounded rectangle. Classic ovals and squares are always in style.

For every face there is a variety of suitable frame shapes. Use them to balance and highlight your best features.

What is Depth Perception and Why Do We Need It?

DEPTH PERCEPTION: an important aspect of normal, healthy vision; a result of good stereoscopic vision; the ability to visually perceive depth and three dimensional space; the ability to visually judge relative distances between objects; a perceptual skill that aids accurate movement in three-dimensional space.
